DESCRIPTION:The Boite and ASA present:Tangos to Turkey\, a delicious selection of accordion music\,with Stephen Cutriss and Phil Carroll\,17th June Box Hill Community Arts CentreIn a new partnership for The Boite\, with Accordion Society of Australia\, we offer a tantalising selection of music from Argentinian tango to the melismatic tunes of the Middle East. Stephen Cutriss is one of Australia’s leading exponents of the mystifying and obtuse instrument\, the bandoneón. Beginning its life in 19th century Germany\, the bandoneón quickly became the quintessential instrument of Argentinian tango. Its versatility is unmatched. Joined on piano by another of Australia’s leading tango aficionados\, Amy Lynch\, the duo will explore the many moods and voices of the bandoneón – from traditional tango to Bach and beyond. And of course\, the formidable music of Ástor Piazzolla!The bandoneon resulted from the evolution of the concertina\, invented by Carl Friedrich Uhlig (1789-1874) in 1839\, inspired by the accordion\, and conceived as a portable version of the harmonium (a type ofpump organ). In Argentina\, the organito\, a small portable harmonium was the original instrument for the tango dancing\, played outdoors. The bandoneon is part of the hand-held bellows-driven free-reed family\, sometimes called squeezeboxes.Phil Carroll was founding leader of Prahran Accordion Band 2015-2016 and recently played on Wog Boy 3 soundtrack\, various other TV shows and for many seasons\, with SBS Taste Le Tour. Globalgrooves.com.au  His accordion career spans 40 years\, from bush bands in the 80s\, Phil moved into European music playing with Ernie Gruner\, violinist in Bohemian Nights and Klezmeritis. As his understanding of styles and genres increased\, Phil came to play for the Italian choir La Voce Della Luna\, French group Bric-A-Brac \, Italian group Sanacori and with Ruth Roshan and Tango Noir.With Middle-Eastern groups Alwan and Yalla!\, Phil plays quartertone accordion. He has performed in New Zealand\, New Caledonia\, Italy\, and Istanbul where he lived for two years.For this performance he will work with percussionist and multi-instrumentalist\, David Joseph who has studied drumming in West Africa and Brazil\, and has played with King Marong\, Ajak Kwai and Lamine Sonko amongst others. He currently works with ARIA award winning band Melbourne Ska Orchestra\, electro-cumbia outfit Dr Hernandez\, 8 piece Ska-jazz band Skazz and looping duo Strange Attractor’Together these two duos offer music lovers a splendid celebration of accordion music from across the globe. 7:30pm\, Friday 17th June\,Box Hill Community Arts Centre470 Station St. Box HillEntry $30; $20 (conc)  Bookings www.boite.com.au
